Our Sustainability Report 2019-2020

We are committed to integrating sustainability into our business at every level – from client projects to our own operations and using our influence in the wider community. Informed by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we have implemented a clear strategy for reaching our targets and measuring our efforts along the way. We’re pleased to share our progress in the Designed by Woulfe Sustainability Report for 2019-2020.

We have followed the SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting) principles of carbon reporting. SECR requires businesses to report on Scope 1 & 2 emissions and Scope 3 emissions that relate to business travel.

As there are no company vehicles, there are no Scope 1 & 2 emissions (fuel burned by the business). Therefore the majority of reported emissions are resulting from business travel. Flight and train distances have been calculated. Depending on the class of travel, government conversion rates have been used to translate these into emissions. A private diesel car is shared for business use and therefore half of the annual mileage of the vehicle has been included in the calculation. The home working allowance is based on a 2020 study by Ecoact on behalf of Lloyds and NatWest banks.

Carbon Footprint Report

A key part of our sustainability report is calculating our carbon footprint, which we have done for 2019/2020. Calculating and offsetting your carbon footprint is a voluntary exercise. Measuring our business’ footprint allows us to identify opportunities to reduce and offset residuals. We have measured all emissions and set targets for reduction and offset what cannot be reduced. The report shows that the company has saved 60 tonnes of CO2 emissions from being released into the atmosphere. Offsetting what is unavoidable, we will be supporting the Utsil Naj Healthy Homes For All project in Guatemala.

Best Practice Sustainability Reporting

We have followed internationally recognised standard requirements for best practices. Our carbon emission reductions are based on an accurate baseline and have been credibly quantified. The project we selected to support through our offsetting, Utsil Naj, is aligned with the ethos and mission of Designed by Woulfe. They help to improve living conditions in a sustainable way for communities who have been disproportionately affected by climate change and even though it focuses on providing cookstoves, it also hugely impacts education helps to make peoples’ homes better places to live.

Healthy Homes For All In Guatemala

The purpose of offsetting should be to fund projects that actively remove emissions for the atmosphere. Ideally they will also provide additional benefits in line with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (helping education, health, equality etc). Projects often have a higher impact therefore in developing nations. Utsil Naj works to improve the living conditions of communities by providing them with improved cookstoves (ICS). An average of 24kg of firewood is used per household per day in Guatemala, so by supporting this project we are participating in reducing the use of firewood which in turn lowers carbon emissions, reduces exposure to toxic fumes, dramatically decreases household air pollution, and prevents forest degradation.
