This week we visited Adrian Sassoon At The London House Of Modernity, a joint art, design and furniture exhibition from London-based art dealer Adrian Sassoon and the Stockholm-based Modernity Gallery.
Modernity Gallery’s directors Andrew Duncanson and Isacc Pineus specialise in rare and high-grade furniture, ceramics, glass, lighting and jewellery by the most renowned Scandinavian designers of the 20th Century. The pair called on Adrian Sassoon, whose expertise lies in international, contemporary works of decorative art and antique 18th-century French porcelain, to co-curate the exhibition with them.
Taking place at Modernity’s London home in Marylebone’s 14 Cavendish Square, a Palladian mansion dating back to 1770, the exhibition presents a unique and inspiring display of both gallery’s signature collections. Showcasing the best from their respective niches, the works contrast and complement each other in myriad ways, evident through the subtle cross-overs of shapes, materials and colours. When experienced side by side within the grand interiors at 14 Cavendish Square, the worlds of modern contemporary and elegant, classic design collide beautifully.
Our highlights included luxury glass pieces by Danish glassblower Tobias Møhl, detailed porcelain vessels by Japanese artist Hitomi Hosono, Fernando Casasempere’s clay and Indian ink on felt painting (Salar de Atacama, 2019), porcelain vases by Bath-based designer Andrew Wicks, and a lacquered steel, brass and leather floor lamp by Finnish designer and architect Alvar Aalto. Other artists and designers featured in the exhibition include Junko Mori, Tim Edwards, Märta Måås-Fjetterström, Hiroshi Suzuki, Finn Juhl, Felicity Aylieff and Stephen Cox RA.
The exhibition launched during London’s annual art and design week and will run until 28th October 2020, so catch it while you can!
