How did your journey into art begin, and what led to the creation of ARTITLEDcontemporary?

My journey into art began in 2001. I was working for Ahrend Office Furniture in Arnhem in the Netherlands when one day an art dealer and gallery owner from Venice visited our showroom. He purchased some furniture for his gallery and then offered me a job to run it at the end of our meeting. After seven years working at the gallery, which specialised in glass sculptures, and after having learned all facets of the art world by participating in many art fairs for this gallery all over the world, I decided to open my own space. I also did this because being away from home and my wife and children became increasingly difficult. In 2008, I started ARTITLEDcontemporary in a small village close to my hometown with a strong focus on photography as this is where my passion was, and still is. My goal was and is to represent the artists of our gallery exclusively for Europe and the United Kingdom and to participate in many art fairs in Europe and the United Kingdom to actively find not only Dutch but international collectors too.

Was there a particular moment or experience that sparked your passion and drew you towards becoming a curator and gallerist?

While travelling and participating in many art fairs for the Italian gallery, I had the chance to discover and experience the enormous variety of art from all over the world. At the same time, I learned what works gave me that special gut feeling, as I strongly believe that one needs to fall in love with the piece to consider bringing it into your home and to enjoy the beauty and mystery of it for a very long time. Over the years, we have placed many artworks in the homes of people all around the world and I have seen the effect of beautiful artwork for a home and collectors. To search for and represent high-quality and exclusive artworks and to bring positivity and joy to people’s lives is incredibly inspiring to me.

ARTITLEDcontemporary showcases some truly outstanding and impactful pieces. What do you look for in the artists and photographers you represent in the gallery? What is your process when seeking new artists?

The most important thing for me is the ‘gut feeling’ when looking for artists to represent through our gallery. I am always looking for butterflies in my stomach as when I have a true passion for an artwork, I don’t need to sell the work but merely share the passion. I am often told that the collectors can feel the passion when I talk about an artwork and that it does not feel that I am trying to sell the work. We find our artists mainly online, and by visiting art fairs and artists’ studios. We are also often contacted by artists searching for representation through our gallery. We try to find a certain variety and balance in our selection of artists and artworks.

You have unique insight into what drives collectors to build their art collections. Could you share what you’ve observed regarding your clients’ motivations? Does their interest lean more towards a passion for the pieces themselves, or do they view collecting as an investment opportunity with potential value appreciation over time?

Most clients looking for artworks are looking for ‘conversation pieces’, meaning that they will invite colleagues, employees and visitors who see these works to comment and in this way start a more casual conversation. Some clients looking for artwork for their homes are looking for the perfect work to match the surroundings in colour and atmosphere. By far, most clients looking for artwork for their home are not looking for a specific piece of work for a specific destination in their house, but spontaneously fall in love with an artwork and follow their gut feeling. Naturally for all collectors, the price of the work needs to match their budget and they must also have feelings about the work that aligns with their interests. I believe that collectors should simply intensely enjoy the work they have fallen for and purchased.

For most artists, nobody can predict their future or the rise in value of their works as this will depend on many aspects. If the price matches the budget and the passion for the work, that is by far the most important thing for collectors. If a work is at a higher price level, then the collector may also consider the artwork as an investment and the gallery needs to explain the price level and expectations for the future. After sixteen years, I still enjoy the idea of a collector passing by our stand during an art fair and instantly falling for an artwork on our wall. It’s the first moment of confusion which builds towards the realisation of having fallen in love with the artwork. This is exactly how my wife and I select the artworks for our private collection and without this mutual feeling, we do not make a purchase.

With the previous question in mind, do you have any advice for those with a desire to start or build upon an art collection?

Firstly, visit many galleries and art fairs to see and experience a great amount and variety of artworks and in this way learn and develop a personal feeling and taste. If the right feeling arrives when looking at an artwork in a gallery or art fair, start a conversation with the gallery and learn about the artist and the artwork. Regarding the pricing, I feel that the gallery should always be able to explain why an artwork has this pricing in such a way that it is understandable for the collector. Also, consider whether the price matches your budget and feeling. Ask yourself whether you are looking for artwork to enjoy or as an investment. Communication with the gallery should be open and pleasant. If you are a new collector, it’s best not to decide on the spot but to go back after a few days to ascertain whether that ‘wow’ feeling is still there for you. If that feeling is still there, I would purchase it.

ARTITLEDcontemporary participates in art fairs all over the world. How does your presence at these fairs impact your business? How do fairs facilitate the sale of pieces compared to other channels such as online or shopfronts?

We strongly believe in the fact that one needs to see the artwork in person to experience it in the right way. The feeling of standing in front of the artwork on the wall can’t be matched, and looking at it online just doesn’t measure up. There are so many details that can only be seen in reality, and also, one needs to experience the full artwork including the presentation and framing of the work. We try to present the artworks as clearly as possible on our website including an installation view, but we prefer to show the works to the collectors in reality.

When we started our gallery, we never had the intention to only present our artists in our gallery in the Netherlands. We have always been looking for a certain exclusivity when representing an artist, and we look either for an established artist with an international name or for a young artist to help build their name internationally through our gallery. As most artists are being represented exclusively in Europe and the United Kingdom, we need to travel and participate in a variety of art fairs in Europe and the United Kingdom.

Instead of waiting in our gallery solely for Dutch collectors, we are looking for and wishing to meet international clients through participating in art fairs. In this way, we have the chance to meet art collectors from many different countries and we can represent our artists on a much wider, and therefore stronger, platform. Furthermore, the travelling and international scope of what we do makes our job so much more fun! Our gallery participates in around twelve international art fairs every year, and by far most of our sales are generated during these fairs, and only a smaller part of our sales are generated through our website.

What is it like working with Designed by Woulfe? Explain the creative and collaborative process to ensure the pieces fit the vision and aesthetic of the space?

Working with Designed by Woulfe, and specifically with Brian Woulfe, is a great pleasure. Brian has a vibrant personality and a strong passion for beautiful things, so he can share his passion for certain artworks with his clients. He is a true, no-nonsense professional and I can strongly state that he has great taste and the right eye to find the perfect artwork for his clients. His passion comes from the heart, and he will only recommend artworks to his clients which he openly and strongly supports. Even though Brian is very well prepared and knows exactly what his clients need and want, he also needs to fall for the artwork when experiencing it on our stand before actually recommending the work. I believe that we share a similar taste, resulting in some wonderful artworks from our gallery on his private walls.

Looking forward, can you share a glimpse of any highly anticipated projects or ventures on the horizon, and how do you envision these endeavours shaping your journey within the art world?

I have been a fan of the photographic works by artist Dean West for many years now. The quality of his outdoor staged works and intimate studio works are always at a very high level and he never ceases to surprise and amaze me. For his new and current series “The Palms” and “American West” he has created stunning studio shots of portraits of animals and cowboys related to his home state of Florida. The portraits of the black wolf and the kodiak bear are especially striking, and will certainly give art collectors the right gut feeling. Dean’s star is rising and he is an artist to watch. My advice would be to follow him and, if you have fallen in love with one of his pieces, do not hesitate to purchase his work as soon as possible before his work appreciates. Also, Australian artist Tom Blachford is a name to watch and follow. He has travelled to Palms Springs in California many times during the last eight years to capture the amazing mid-century modern architecture houses of the 50s and 60s combined with the cars of the homeowners under the natural light of the full moon. The special light in the works from his series “Midnight Modern” and the overall nostalgic and cinematic atmosphere of Palm Springs with its architecture, palm trees and snow-capped mountains result in beautiful, relaxing, timeless and dreamy artworks.
